Expressions of Love in the Midst of Challenges

In The Father's Lap

"What shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who is against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how will He not also with Him freely give us all things?" (Rom 8:31 & 32 NASB)

Doubt, pain, frustration, confusion, tears, a roller coaster of emotions; all have been my companion over the past few months. Reassurance, reminders, expressions of love, holding me close, peace where there is no peace; all have been The Father's response to my questions.

Yesterday's Daily Bread devotional was in Romans 8, my favorite NT chapter. When I checked my email and Facebook this morning I am again edified by the things I read. I am an emotional mess and He knows it. I need a daily reminder of His love for me and He is very much aware of it. I fight doubt as I recover from losing yet another house, fight fear as I face a mountain of debt and fight intense emotional pain as I face another Resurrection Day without my children. The loving Father that He is brings my attention back to Himself.

Over the past few days He has brought many reminders to me as I keep myself in a place where He feeds my spirit. He has good plans for my future (Jer. 29:11). He will restore the years the locusts have eaten (Joel 2:25). He has His Spirit interceding on my behalf with groaning too deep for words (Rom 8:26-27). He helps me to wait for Him, to keep His way (Ps 37:34).

How much longer must I wait for the promised restoration of what was taken from me? How much longer must I wait for the return of my prodigal children? How much longer must I wait for the promised Joy that comes in the Morning? I don't know, but I do know the God of the Impossible. I do know that He loves me. I am even more reminded of this as we have just celebrated the Holiest weekend of the year where we remember our Savior's death and resurrection. He is risen – so how could I continue to wallow in my pain and sorrow? He who spared not His son will also freely restore to me what I am waiting for, just as He restored Job when the fullness of time has come.

I don't know if there is really a way for anyone to understand the depths of pain and suffering from which this work of Elizabeth's springs. As one who has witnessed this firsthand, being physically with her in the day-to-day more than anyone else, it's still unfathomable to me what she goes through. The reality of her minute-to-minute existence is far too unbelievable to wrap the mind around. Most of the writing was done in a very dark, cold room in complete silence. Much was done with the computer on Elizabeth's lap, with her typing with her eyes closed, as the light even from the computer screen was too much, too painful. All of it was done with a continual headache/migraine, as those only change in level of severity. She worked in small increments in between excruciating, unbearable physical pain and exhaustion, and moments of reprieve where the physical pain/symptoms and migraines were "bearable enough."

Most of us will never know the loneliness that she experiences or the fear as she watches uncontrollable things happen to her body each day. Even though I am with her as often as possible, and she is never out of my thoughts or my heart, most of this she suffers completely alone, except for her constant companion and angel of God, Symon.

Yet in this existence, that is impossible to call a life, she has never wavered in her faith. She has sought, screamed, challenged, asked tough questions, and been candid in her queries, and also candid in all of what she experiences. However, she has never abandoned her faith. Additionally, she has always been there to support those she loves in spite of the constant abandonment, with words of faith, encouragement, love, and wisdom, always giving beyond her strength and capabilities and often paying a huge price of increased physical pain and other symptoms for days or weeks, as her own health deteriorates.

To me, she is the epitome of what God wants for all of us. To love where there is no evidence, give when there's nothing left and believe where there is nothing left to hold onto except "the scratch marks our nails left behind."

Elizabeth, you are and will always be a daughter, very dear friend, and mentor to me. I congratulate you on completing this amazing project, this work of raw faith. Your perseverance is astounding and awe-inspiring. To witness the tortures you live every second of every day, the loneliness, the travesty, and injustices, and then to see the incredible genuine love you are, is truly phenomenal. God shines through you so brilliantly, such is evident to all who know you and know of you—and is equally evident through the God-inspired writing you have completed and now share with the world. I love you forever.

Author and previous pastor, Samuel O. Enyia in his book, "Be Healed! Challenges and Triumphs of Health and Healing" writes to all those who are afflicted with any disease, sickness or suffering. He offers hope and encouragement to all those that are suffering and hopes they may find help, comfort, inspiration and "… ultimately healing in their own lives." The author encourages the reader to not give up no matter what the circumstances may speak, and encourages those who have faith in Jesus not to give up. Having had his own life threatening challenges and having experienced miraculous healing in his own life, the author is uniquely qualified to testify to the triumphant healing he has received and witnessed in his family members' lives as well. While challenges present themselves, triumphantly and courageously, Enyia boldly proclaims the Gospel and faithfully writes that the healing of Jesus is available to all. This book points the reader to the one Who is the ultimate Healer and Great Physician, Jesus. A much needed book in these times, as many desire recovery and restoration to health.

This book is invaluable in our world today in that it takes a comprehensive look at the subject, and often controversial, issue of divine healing. Going back to the beginning in the Book of Genesis the author takes the reader through a faith filled journey that educates the reader on the origin of sickness, the fall, who is it that heals, the ministry of healing through prayer and Christians, Jesus' mandate and mission, healing gifts, healing in Acts and why are all not healed. Emphatically, the author claims the Word of God is truth and must be relied upon for healing, and states that in today's world while medical intervention is available, sometimes this is not always the answer or the only answer.

Each chapter is revealing and compelling as the author delves into the miraculous works of Jesus during His ministry on earth. Offering the reader faith and the Word of God, the author builds faith because, "Faith comes by hearing the Word of God…" The book is refreshing in that the author does not give his opinion, but rather offers the revealed Word of God as the core foundation of his book.

Addressing the skeptics, the author honestly approaches the questions asked of some such as why is one person healed and one is not? Why are all not healed? And why does the church not experience miracles as in times past? All these questions are answered, by not a pumping up of faith, but by honestly referring the reader back to the Word of God.

Ending with strategies of how best to go through, battle and wage war against illness, Enyia, gives the reader faith to stand upon that is rich in scripture. Holy Spirit inspired, this writing will edify, encourage and educate the Body of Christ. Written by a man of great faith and one who has seen miraculous healing in his own life; the author has been faithful to the Lord in writing this book as to encourage all to not give up! What comfort and inspiration this book will offer to many. This book will become a life preserver for many offering answers and life to many who are suffering with disease and prolonged illnesses. "Gravity, True For You But Not For Me" by Author Michael Edwards is quite a powerful mini-book that packs the punch, "Big surprises come in little packages," which is an understatement. Perfect for evangelism and originally an e-book, this book addresses every possible question or doubt about Christianity by combining facts, evidence and the truth with biblical principles. This book has the reader examine what is truth, does God exist, can we trust the Bible, did the resurrection really happen, and who did Jesus claim to be. Then by giving a twelve-point conclusion the author ends the journey with a pathway to salvation. Keep several copies of this one in your car, you'll want to hand them out to everyone you meet!

The author states in his opening paragraph of the book, "It's not about religion, it's about truth." The author goes on to explain his purpose for writing the book being that the, "…objective evidence must be considered in order to make an informed decision." Otherwise believing something because your parents believe it, relying on emotions or believing something to be true because you believe it to be true does not make it true; this is called "blind faith," as the author emphatically states. The facts must be examined and as the author continues to write, "Every person deserves at least the chance to examine the facts and make an informed decision."

Compelling, powerful and filled with common sense this book is packed with undeniable factual and scientific basis that clearly state the case for Christianity and why, if you believe or not, the Bible is true for you. Initially, and ingeniously, using the analogy of the law of gravity, the author catches the attention of the reader by stating that the law of gravity is true for everyone whether you have faith in gravity or not; gravity is true for everyone.

In much the same way, the author points the reader to the facts with an easy to read, fast-paced book that examines what truth is, and how best to look at the objective evidence. Author, Theresa Franklin does a wonderful job in administering to the heart of families and encouraging families to stick together in love through this fictional short story. We all know what our lives look from the outside. But when we examine our family life from the inside, more than we like to admit, one will find dysfunction in the home. When we come to a place of acknowledging our sins and confessing them to God, God can work on our behalf. The author asks these important questions and urges us all to spend, "…time in front of God's mirror and try to see what those who know you best actually see? Are you a Christian? Have you accepted Christ as your savior?" In that, the author is asking, are you walking the walk and talking the talk? So many people profess to be Christians, but as Christians we should be exhibiting love, respect and service to our families in the home as well. If not, this book will lead the way to a new path of wholeness in Christ for families.

Driven by emotions, control, negativity, judgment and perfectionism, Cynthia is in complete denial of her behavior towards her family members. Severely affected, the husband is miserable, and her children avoid her as much as possible. Inevitably when there is dysfunction in the home, the author states, the stress can be measured in emotional and physical illnesses. Although the book is a fictional story, the author has described a very real and believable picture of how life is in our own families sometimes. The Owens family is torn from the inside out, due to stresses from the contention and discord caused by one family member suffering from deep emotional wounds caused from her own dysfunctional childhood.

This book is truly a blessing to families and the body of Christ. The author, through the use of scriptures and examples of family life, paints a wonderful picture of how life can be through the love and redemption of Jesus Christ. The author promotes family in this story of healing and encourages others, that "…love covereth a multitude of sins." Families will find solace and comfort through this book. Theresa's Franklin's writing style flows smoothly making for an easy read, keeping the reader fully engaged. This book will minister to all families that are "less than perfect." A highly recommend, encouraging read that will impact others for Christ. God can work in any situation, as the author illustrates, even the impossible ones.

Calvary Chapel congregation stunned as Chuck Smith announces that he has lung cancer

COSTA MESA, CA (ANS) -- The congregation at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, California, were stunned today (Sunday, January 01, 2012) when Pastor Chuck Smith, it senior pastor, announced during his Sunday morning services that he has lung cancer and will have a biopsy on Tuesday and surgery the following week.

Chuck Smith started preaching in the 1960s Chuck Smith, now in his eighties and the father of the Jesus People Revolution in Southern California, said that he has never smoked in his life.
At at the end of the third service that was broadcast on KWVE 107.9 FM, his son-in-law, Brian Brodersen, joined with other pastors at the huge church and anointed him with oil and prayed for his healing.

Karl Corcoran, evangelism pastor at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, posted on Facebook, "Update: Pastor Chuck Smith having surgery this month for lung cancer after a series of tests this week. Estimated recovery time is 3 weeks."

In response to the posting, Kathy Buckley Keys said, "We were stunned with the news of Pastor Chuck. His ways are higher than ours and He is able to keep that which is committed to Him so we commit Pastor Chuck and all that is related to him, family, doctors and treatments to the Great Physician who knows Pastor Chuck intimately and ask for His guidance, favor, love and support through this time."

Shortly after the announcement, the KWVE Facebook page was flooded with goodwill messages for Chuck Smith.

Joni Barger wrote, "I'm praying for a miracle. I'm an avid listener to the radio program. Pastor Chuck I've learned so much from you. God is with you Sir."

Kim Krabbenhoft-Ancora posted, "Oh I am so sad...tears...we will be lift him up in prayer...but as said above, Pastor Chuck of all people will use this to bring Glory to The Lord!!!"

Adrianna Kneefel added, "We love you Pastor Chuck...the Lord uses your life daily to feed thousands of His sheep. Praying that much fruit would come out of this and that the the sickness would be removed in Jesus name... we speak words of life! Lord let your servant live and continue to bring the Word. Chuck is a bright light in a dark age... Lord let his light shine!"

Rachel Fret said, "I was floored when I heard the news this morning. Praying for Papa Chuck and his family. .. my husband had an aunt who died of lung cancer a few years ago. She never smoked in her whole life. Doctors assumed that it was due to where she was living...Redlands, Ca...air pollution. Don't know but yeah, we found out then that it's not a cancer caused by smoking."

And Cassandra Voight Estes posted, "Praying... Please Lord keep Chuck with us so that others might hear your precious word. You have blessed Chuck all these years. I know he will not waste his cancer and you will use it for you glory."

In a previous tribute to Chuck Smith, ANS correspondent, Brian Nixon, who for several years co-hosted Pastors Perspective with Chuck Smith, wrote: "Pastor Chuck Smith, founder of the Calvary Chapel Movement and one of the key figureheads of the Jesus Movement, has touched the hearts and lives of countless of people in his six decades of ministry.

"Not to mention his influence upon the fabric of Christian culture: from the 2,000 plus Calvary Chapel churches spanning the globe to the praise-and-worship phenomena initiated in the 1960's. His impact looms large in the halls of modern Christian history.

"Sadly, however, Pastor Chuck had a brief setback, suffering a couple of what were described as 'mini-strokes' at his home on December 27, 2009.

"I was blessed to have worked side-by-side with Pastor Chuck for almost eight years, covering numerous fields: education, publishing, radio, and television.

"Not only was I able to glean from his words, thoughts, answers, and actions, on a weekly basis, but I was also able to watch him in a variety of situations: answering questions on a radio program we hosted together, cooperating with him on books, brainstorming and praying with him through tough educational situations. And, most special of all, to watch his interaction with other human beings.

"Let me say that ... Pastor Chuck is a true gentleman. He is a man who understands God's grace and the need for people to experience that grace in the love of Christ."

I ask all of our ANS readers to pray for a swift recovery for this great Man of God, that he may be able to continue his amazing ministry for many more years to come.
